Mel was born on the family farm to John and Signa Baker. He was delivered at home by his grandmother. He grew up on the farm working along side his dad and brothers. He graduated from Mead high School in 1948. He participated and lettered in multiple sports and won a golden glove in boxing. After graduation he started working at Kaiser Aluminum Mead Works. After a couple of years he enlisted in the USAF. She spent 4 years stationed in California, Texas, Alaska, Kimpo, South Korea and finally Fairchild Air Force Base. He was honorably discharged and went back to work at Kaiser for 43 years. He married Fonda Clarke in 1957 and had 2 children: Lisa Cummins and Dale Baker. Mel was a very gentle and patient man that loved his family dearly. He loved to hunt and fish and spend time on the farm. Mel was blessed with 5 grandsons: John Baker, Luke Baker, Ryan Baker, David Layne & Kyler Layne. He also has 11 great-grandchildren whom he adored. He is survived by his son Dale (Bobbie) Baker and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John & Signa Baker, brothers Lou Baker, Lyle Baker, Jack Baker; sister Alene Congheton; and daughter Lisa Cummins.
