Gertrude Cutchen

CUTCHEN, Gertrude (Age 95) – Gertrude Langston Cutchen passed away on April 21, 2018 in Spokane, WA. She was born at home on January 17, 1923 to Walter William and Maggie Eunice McCoy in Sardis, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Parley Nathaniel Cutchen; and her oldest son, Jed (Donna) Cutchen. Gertrude is survived by her son, David (Carolyn) of Kanab, UT; daughter, Olivia (Fred) Oliver of Orem, UT; daughter, Laura Cutchen; daughter, Elnora (John) Leppert of Spokane, WA; daughter, Wanda (Rudy) Karg of Nine Mile Falls, WA; 30 grandkids; 59 great grandkids; and 23 great-great grandkids. She married Parley Nathaniel Cutchen on January 27, 1940 near Dothan Alabama. Soon after they moved to Douglas, AZ their first 4 children were born. Later they moved to Red Bluff, CA where two more children followed. After retirement, they lived in Anderson, CA and in the early 90’s they moved to Spokane, WA. Gertrude was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a temple worker at the Oakland, CA, Washington DC and Spokane, WA temples. Gertrude was taught to be thrifty by her mother and that continued throughout her life. Her family remembers canning in 100-plus degree heat during the summers. She sewed her children’s clothes. Scraps were used in quilts. Gertrude was an avid quilter. After Parley died, she kept busy quilting and during the intervening years she made over 150 quilts. She liked to walk and hiked the entire Centennial Trail, doing crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy. She was able to visit all fifty states, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Services will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the LDS Chapel, 808 E. Sitka Ave., Spokane. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery, Spokane, WA.
