Arlowyn Gunning, 93, of Spokane went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 11, 2023.
She was born August 10, 1930, at home in Harlem, MT, to Eddie and Carrie Brekke. Arlowyn was raised in Harlem and came to Spokane in 1948 to attend Kinman Business University. She subsequently moved to Bozeman, MT, and attended York Christian College in York, NE. In 1951, Arlowyn married Virgil Gunning and north Spokane became her home for the next 72 years.
Virgil and Arlowyn lived in a home Virgil built on a mink ranch on Little Spokane River Drive near Pine River Park, and their four children were born during that time. They moved "into town" in 1963 to a new home near the North Division Y where they lived the rest of their married lives. After Virgil's passing, many winters were spent in Arizona, and a new home was acquired further north.
Arlowyn worked in her family grocery store and for the telephone company in Bozeman prior to her marriage and for Old National Bank in Spokane during her marriage. The rest of her life she was a homemaker. She loved music and played the piano, the organ, and sang. She was active in church her entire life and was a member of Spokane Gospel Chapel and Monroe Park Gospel Chapel for over 40 years. She loved to camp and travel and many domestic and international trips were highlights for her.
Arlowyn was preceded in death by her loving husband of 37 years, Virgil; her parents; and sister Beverly Chezik. She is survived by her children Todd Gunning (Micki), Wayne Gunning (Sonja), Joyce Gunning and David Gunning; brothers Dwight Brekke and Lloyd Brekke; and 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.
