Sherman Ellis Simpson

April 25, 1930 — March 30, 2017

Born April 25th, 1930 to Jim and Lola Simpson in the rolling hills of the Palouse near Garfield and Oakesdale WA. 1 of 7 siblings: Eleanor, Enid, Faye, Harold, Norma, and Ronald. He attended West Valley High School where he met Sylvia May Hayes. He enlisted in the Naval reserve just after high school and then married Sylvia on June 19th, 1948. He also worked for Gaffney's in Sprague at the time. His first son Doug was born in October of 1949 and he moved his family to Greenbluff, while working for Carstens Packing Plant. Randy, his second son, was born in 1952. Around this time he started working as a shipping clerk for Armour's Star Meats, and was there for 19 years until they closed in 1971. Rod, his third son, was born in 1955. In 1972 he would start his career as an Operator for Hazen & Clark Construction, where he would eventually retire. He farmed on Green- bluff from 1950 until he was 62 and would continue to garden the rest of his life. Sherm loved to go to auctions and buy old tractors, motors and machinery so he could fix them up into working order again. He loved to fish and really enjoyed family gatherings at Waitt's Lake. He always helped others around the bluff to learn farming techniques and fix their equipment. If he couldn't find a part for the job, he made one. A definite "Jack of all Trades" and a master of some as well. One of these was his "legendarious" story and joke telling skills. He loved to make others laugh and was always witty and quick to respond with wise-cracks. He had a mighty infectious laugh himself, that was truly unforgettable. Eventually many of his friends would title him the "Mayor of Greenbluff". He was also a Chief of the Greenbluff Fire Dept., Caretaker to the Peone Cemetery, and an active member of the Greenbluff Grange and Methodist Church. He passed on Thursday night, March 30th in the peace and comfort of his home with close family, and his dog Oscar, right by his side. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Sylvia; his three sons: Doug (Judy), Randy (Kathy) and Rod; as well as 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Graveside service for family will be on Saturday, April 8th at Peone Cemetery and a Memorial Service for all at the Greenbluff Grange at 2:30pm.
