Margret "MAGGIE" E. Johnson

January 29, 1936 — November 20, 2016

Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin, and Friend was born on January 29, 1936 to Leo and Kathryn Winnett in Dayton, WA, and passed away on November 20, 2016 at Hospice House in Spokane, WA. Margret’s early years were spent in the Dayton area, where she recalled happy times on her Aunt and Uncle’s farm along with her younger brother, Robert. As a child the children moved with their Mother to Spokane, where her early education began at Bemis Elementary. She went on to become a graduate of John Rogers High School in 1954, and was a proud Majorette with the Band. During these years Margret was very involved in Job’s Daughters and moved through the chairs to become an Honored Queen. After High School, Margret was employed by Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Co. as an Operator. On August 20, 1955, Margret married Walter W. (Mike) Johnson. A marriage lasting until “Mike’s” passing on January 19, 2014. Mike’s career was the U.S. ARMY, and Margret supported him as a military wife, moving to many assigned posts in the U.S. and Europe along with their two children, John Robert and Barbara Kay. While at these post assignments, she worked at various Secretarial jobs. When Mike retired, the family settled in the Spokane Valley and Margret went to work for Spokane Community College in the Counseling Dept. She loved her work and her co-workers. Margret enjoyed reading more than anything. She liked Figure Skating and attending Championship events. She embroidered beautifully and she liked to play the Slots, especially the ‘Pennies’. She spent many years RV camping with friends and family. She also liked to travel which included and Alaskan Cruise with family and friends. Travel had to be by land or sea, she did not like to fly. Margret is pre-deceased by her parents, Kathryn and John Szulerecki; a brother, Robert; a daughter, Barbara Kay; and by her husband, Walter (Mike). She is survived by her son, John (Cheryl); grandchildren, Bryan (Vanessa), Kyle and Leah Marie Johnson; great-grandson, Austin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. “We would like to thank the Drs. And Nurses at SHMC, and the staff of Sunshine Gardens for their wonderful care of Maggie. The family also wishes to extend a grateful “Thank You” to Hospice House for making her final journey peaceful.” Visitation for family and friends will be on Monday and Tuesday, November 28, 29, between the hours of 9 AM and 6 PM at Riplinger Funeral Home, 4305 N Division, Spokane, WA. A Funeral Service will take place on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 12 Noon, at the Funeral Home. Interment will conclude at Fairmount Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice House-South of Spokane.
