Alton "Al" D. Hammer

February 8, 1925 — May 15, 2009

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend entered in to rest with the Lord on Friday May 15, 2009. He was born on February 8, 1925 to Emma Trout & Harvey Hammer in Ansley, Nebraska the youngest of nine children. They moved to the Spokane area in 1938. He graduated from the Otis Orchards High School receiving his diploma earlier so he could join the Armed Services. Al joined the Navy on February 5, 1943 just three days short of his 18th birthday. After his discharge in 1946, he worked at Fairchild Air Force Base using his Navy training, in the Heating Plant. Al retired from Fairchild as a Heating Engineer and Foreman of the plant in 1980. Al is survived by his wife, Frances, married for 52 years after meeting on a blind date. They were married on August 10, 1956 and have seven children all surviving; Barbara (Pat) Fowler, Alan (Kathy), Robert (Linda), David, Terry (Suzanne), Brenda (Wayne) Reynolds and Chris (Becky); numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Al and Frances were involved in the Boy Scouts and served as Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leaders from 1958 to 1967 moving up as the boys grew. They never thought twice about loading the family into the family truck with tents and sleeping bags spending weeks on the road camping and exploring the country. Al was a devoted member of Fowler United Methodist Church where he and Frances served the Lord for over 51 years. He will be dearly missed. Memorial Services will be Friday, May 22nd at 11:00 am at Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N Howard in Spokane, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Memorial Fund at Fowler United Methodist Church.
